Frequently asked questions
How is the NEA electricity bill calculated?
NEA bills progressively: each slab of units is charged at its own rate. A monthly service (minimum) charge is then added based on your meter capacity and the highest slab your consumption reaches. From Shrawan 2083, 5% VAT is applied on the energy charge for household units above 50.
What is the electricity rate per unit in Nepal right now?
For a common 15A household meter: Rs 4.00 for the first 20 units, Rs 6.50 for 21–30, Rs 8.00 for 31–50, Rs 9.50 for 51–250, and Rs 11.00 above 250 units, plus the service charge.
Is VAT charged on electricity bills?
Yes. Household consumers pay 5% VAT only on the energy charge for units above 50. The first 50 units and the service charge are exempt. Other consumer categories follow different VAT rules.
Will this match my official NEA bill exactly?
It is a close estimate of energy + service + household VAT using published rates. Official bills can include electricity duty, previous arrears, rebates for early payment, or other adjustments. Use this tool for planning, not as a legal invoice.
Which meter rating should I choose?
Most urban households use 15A. Rural or low-use homes may be 5A. Larger homes or small commercial-from-home setups often use 30A or 60A. Check the rating printed on your meter or previous bill.
